Casey Jane Green, ND Naturopathic Consultant
I am very excited to be back in my home state of Iowa where I hope to apply my skills as a Naturopathic physician. My path to Naturopathic medicine began in Des Moines, IA where I grew up. Our family pediatrician went against the widespread popularity of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals amongst his MD peers in the treatment of the common cold and other nonthreatening conditions. Drawing on his experience with patients he instead believed that the body had an innate ability to heal itself and commonly gave advice to support the body’s own healing processes.
In 1993 I left Des Moines, IA to attend Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. I graduated from Lewis & Clark in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. While attending Lewis & Clark I travelled to East Africa for a study abroad program where I was lucky to be immersed in the Samburu and Masaii cultures. I became very interested in the oral literature of these cultures that is passed down verbally to every generation by the elders. Most of these stories involved important life lessons teaching social and religious customs, but others taught younger generations how to survive off the land and respect nature. Their way of life was rooted in the belief that the earth provided everything they needed to survive. It was there in East Africa where I first heard of using plants, food and other natural resources as medicine.
Years after I graduated from Lewis & Clark, I was introduced to the profession of Naturopathic physician by a good friend of my brother and was excited by the prospect of a career in a profession that was so aligned with the way I viewed the relationship of nature with science and health. I graduated from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR in 2007 with the clinical degree of Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine where I was trained to be a primary care physician. I am licensed by the state of Oregon as a Naturopathic Physician. I believe naturopathic physicians are perfect for fulfilling the many roles a primary care physician plays.
After practicing in a multi-disciplinary office in Portland for several years I returned to Iowa in late 2010 to be close to family and immediately became involved in helping the Iowa Naturopathic Physicians Association with its efforts to achieve licensing of naturopathic physicians in the state of Iowa. I strongly believe naturopathic physicians could have a huge positive impact on Iowans’ health care. Not only can naturopathic physicians help fulfill the lacking role of primary care physicians in Iowa, but we can help educate people and other health care providers about the importance of nutrition and lifestyle counseling in the treatment and prevention of chronic and acute health conditions.
Whether the objective is a preventative protocol, maintaining optimal health, or overcoming chronic imbalances to achieve stability in wellness I will design a wellness plan to fulfill the needs and goals of each individual. My practice focuses on the management of chronic health issues, preventative health measures, and optimizing and maintaining wellness. My wellness plans are centered in lifestyle counseling for each person including dietary, sleep, and exercise recommendations. I recommend several forms of natural health therapies including nutrient supplementation, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, flower essences and a European form of homeopathy called biotherapeutic drainage. All of these recommendations can be utilized with any stage of wellness and are focused on restoring, assisting and maintaining the body’s natural healing processes. I believe wellness is an expression of physical, emotional, spiritual, and energetic balance. I am dedicated to helping everyone realize stability on all these levels of wellness and will be your biggest cheerleader.
